Setti has been hosting Masterserver since 2005. For example check threads at cs.rin.ru: http://cs.rin.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?p=390424#p390424. Nowadays there are lots of more users.


About boost
Some people seem quite upset about the server boost. However since the beginning the boost has existed. It is technically impossible to avoid "boosting" some servers. Previously the order was semi-random based on IP address or the game description. Some server admins started changing their "gamedescription" to names such as "_cstrike" to be boosted in the serverlist. That is not good.

Providing the serverlist in random order doesn't make any sense. There needs to be some order in which the servers are sent - there is no such thing as non-order. Current situation is good.

About the serverlist
There are thousands of server on Setti's list. Server admins have a place to put their server and players have way to find those servers. Boost list is completely optional. The serverlist has over hundred thousand users daily. Regular players and regular server admins don't have to worry about anything. As long as Setti can track their server their server will be on the list automatically.

Unfortunately the information sometimes becomes distorted when posted to Russian forums. For that reason it's good that there are people who know English and Russian well enough to communicate properly.

There have been lots of updates to Setti's masterserver during the years. Where are the threads about Setti doing GeoIP identification on these forums?! (link1, link2). GeoIP identification greatly improved the usability of the list. These news most likely don't reach the Russian audience as much as they should.

Many people seem to be still infected by virus spread in the botnet. At Setti it is possible to identify infected players because there are useless web requests coming to non-existing pages. There is now a webpage that lists infected hosts' IP addresses.

Setti was one target of the botnet. There are still useless requests coming to Setti's website. They might originate from infected players part of this botnet.

It is possible to identify people who are infected at Setti because there are these useless web requests from their IP addresses. There is now a virus check page at http://css.setti.info/servervirus/. Tell your friends and visit the page yourself. People who are infected will be informed if their IP address is found at Setti's "virus database".

At Setti it is about 5-60 минут.

Setti needs to verify that servers are patched. Servers that are not patched won't get listed. However server scanner occasionally scans non-patched servers too to see if they have become patched. Offline servers are scanned in similar way. Servers that are online are scanned about every 5 minutes.

In practice it doesn't actually matter how fast servers are initially scanned. Good servers are dedicated servers and always online. It doesn't matter if adding a server takes a few hours because after that the server can be on the list for many months or years.

Listing dynamic IP servers is supported but players rarely play on servers which constantly change IP. Dynamic IPs are practically always home connections on home computers too. More frequent scanning would only increase amount of these servers, which is not good.
